Infertility - Help For Women With PCOS - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

PCOS is a major cause of infertility. In fact, PCOS is a major cause of infertility in women in the United States.

PCOS increases levels of androgens in the ovary, causing a lack of ovulation, or irregular ovulation. Unnatural androgen levels interfere with the normal growth of the follicles, which are carriers of cysts eggs (eggs) in the ovaries. You are born with millions of eggs that develop in follicles during normal cycles. One of these follicles finally releases the egg (ovulation) creating fertility. SOP reduces your chances of getting pregnant by reducing the number of ovulatory cycles per year. The syndrome can also cause ovulation minor defects; even appearing ovulatory cycles may be less than ideal for fertility if left untreated.

DECLARATION OF HOPE

If you want to get pregnant, the options are available. Your treatment plan should be tailored to your individual situation. The recent explosion of research in the SOP and its relation to insulin resistance has added more and better treatment options for patients. Here is a summary:

1. clomiphene citrate (trade names, "Clomid" or "Serophene" prescribed metformin (an insulin sensitizer). The ovulation rate is up to 90 percent and the average pregnancy rate of 50 percent have seen.

2. Take metformin alone. While this is an option, the evidence shows that the use of metformin alone for fertility treatment is not as effective as the combination with clomiphene.

3. injectable gonadotropins. Typically used in case of failure to ovulate with clomiphene. These drugs include hormones FSH (trade names Follistim, Bravelle, Gonal-F) or a combination of FSH and LH (trade name or Repronex Menopur). Injectable gonadotropin ovulation rates are 90 percent and pregnancy rates are about 50 percent.

4. ovarian drilling. Many women who undergo this procedure thereafter again have irregular periods.

5. Modification of diet and exercise. An example would be a reduced carb diet, and regular structured exercise. Of course, you should consider finding other reasons for infertility before engaging in fertility treatments for PCOS.

6. A semen analysis (sperm count) is recommended to see if the problem is with the male. For women, a common procedure is to have the fallopian tubes controlled by an X-ray projection quickly called an HSG HSG), in which a dye is injected into the uterus and out of tubes on a monitor screen. In addition, a laparoscopy may be performed, wherein a small incision in the navel and an endoscope with a video connection to evaluate further inside the basin is inserted. This is usually a short surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia sameday.
