Berberine Treatment For PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, is a hormonal balances abnormality of young women that bind insulin resistance at relatively high androgens (male hormones) and subsequent infertility menstrual irregularities more. PCOS prevalence has increased in recent years, possibly because of the epidemic of obesity and the outcome of obesity and insulin resistance. Approximately 7% of women in the "reproductive age" suffer from PCOS. The syndrome has traditionally been defined by the "Criteria Rotterdam," that is, two of the three conditions, including menstrual irregularities (frequency reduction or the absence of periods), androgen excess (or clinical signs of facial hair, acne, etc.), or polycystic ovary present in the image. The recent consensus, however, is that all three must be identified and actual biochemical evidence of androgen documented up only clinical evidence.
SOP has a strong correlation with obesity and insulin resistance, treatment focused on weight loss through improved / metformin exercise power in the fight against "metabolic syndrome" which is current for these women. Oral contraceptives and anti-androgens are used to control symptoms in general. PCOS can be a problem physically and emotionally challenging for many people. It is important to understand and know all the methods of struggle against this "disease."
Berberine has been successfully used and studied in the treatment of insulin resistance associated with obesity and diabetes, dyslipidemia more (bad) cholesterol accompanying metabolic syndrome. What is interesting is that this powerful natural plant alkaloid is revered in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, but not really anywhere else. With a powerful potential of this type, it is a shame that most doctors have not heard of him. In fact, its effects do not end with blood sugar and cholesterol regulation. This supplement made from powerful plants has been shown to have properties that could potentially be useful in cancer and even Alzheimer's disease!
A new study compared the benefits of treatment with metformin vs placebo berberine in eighty-nine young women with PCOS who also had evidence of insulin resistance for three months. The results showed that berberine exceeded metformin in terms of all cardiometabolic parameters tested including waist circumference, cholesterol, and binding globulin sex hormone (associated with abnormal levels of androgens vs estrogen). These results are encouraging for women with PCOS are overweight or obese and / or metabolic syndrome and wish naturopathic treatment compared to treatment with metformin because berberine improves all aspects of the metabolic syndrome. Should be conducted to assess the effects on androgen levels and menstrual irregularities and physical finding of androgen excess (of hair growth, etc.) other studies.
As always, we recommend starting intensive lifestyle changes primarily to improve the diet and exercise to lose weight and improve health. With berberine, focusing on a whole food diet that emphasizes lean protein and healthy fats, plus a good structured exercise plan will go far in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome. If you feel you have symptoms of PCOS, be sure to discuss possible diagnostic and treatment options with your doctor.
